MUSIC BY NUMBERS AND MATH

MATH IS FUN!

Walk into a classroom and tell children they're going to do math and most likely, you'll hear grumbling and feet stomping. Many students see math as boring, complicated and useless.

I invite you to come inside Ms. Sylvia's classroom. I'm pretty sure the music you here as you enter will give the impression a music class is going on. 


I invite you to go all the way inside. Do not stay by the door. You see, you have to see how children are being turned on to math by using different strategies and ideas. 

Today, students were on the floor keyboard, placing their feet on the keys that corresponded with the numbers that were on the Music Chart on the wall. One of the songs was, "Row, Row, Row you boat."


The chart had numbers for each word. Students had their eyes moving back and forth from the chart to the floor piano. 


As they pressed the correct keys, following the musical notes, they began making the sounds for the song. The more accurate students followed the chart, identifying the numbers and matching them to what was under their feet, the better the sound.






Look a little closer and you'll see the chart with numbers and words. All of these visuals work together to guide students in their next steps. These students are going to definitely have a greater appreciation for working with numbers as they enter PreK in September.

Math was fun and exciting in Ms. Sylvia's classroom. Students wanted to be next. Numbers grabbed their attention because those numbers told them that if you followed them, music would fill the classroom.

Students in Ms. Sylvia's class are truly ready for UPK. ABC Preschool has great teachers that are willing to go out of the box, out of the ordinary, and take students into the extraordinary, making learning and experiencing concepts a wonderful experience.

There are many wonderful events that are celebrated during the month of April. It is wonderful to be in an environment where children are our focus and priority every day. That is why, this year, ABC Preschool and Kindergarten, an Early Childhood Childcare center in Woodside, NY, joined the National Week of the Young Child Celebration for 2016.

Teachers carefully planned for this wonderful week way in advance when snow was on the ground and we were all still bundled up in our winter clothing. We want to highlight some of the great moments that have taken place at our preschool. 

Toddlers and Preschoolers came dressed in their classroom colors and filled our outdoor playground with dance and laughter. Parents were invited to participate by working with their children at home to create musical instruments that they children would play during their music and movement time outdoors during Music Monday #woyc16.

 

Teachers and students waved their hands, turned around and danced to the sounds of fun music. It was a huge jungle gym party for our preschoolers. The celebration continued into the classroom as students shared their homemade or their personal musical toys and instruments with their classmates. It was a day filled with learning experiences that are sure to last for a long time.

 

At ABC Preschool and Kindergarten, it is an honor to be able to prepare wonderful moments for our families. We take great pride in the work we do. Our teachers have gone above and beyond to make this week, #woyc16 one of the best preschool moments for children in Queens, NY. We have the best teachers, without a doubt!

Let's take a few minutes to look at some great moments in one of our 3 year old classrooms. Here is just another example of excellent educational programs in action.

Ms. Alina's students have been engaged in some wonderful activities throughout the month of February and March.

They were proud to show off their Valentine's hearts and then go on with their morning routines.

 

 
As the days rolled on, we joined in what many local daycares would be celebrating for March. You got it! Green day for St. Patrick's day. Students in our Queens childcare facility experienced making their own hats, learning all about making the color green and enjoying some green goodies as well. We celebrate Ms. Alina's unique gift to teach our students with creativity and understanding of what they need during their development at this age.

 There are so many childcare providers in Queens, NY but we take pride in sharing the great things that make us exceptional. Do your research, and you will find that our childcare program in the local NY area is definitely amazing!

PRESCHOOL DISCOVERY AT ABC

Have you ever been somewhere and loved being there so much, you just didn't want to leave? Well, maybe that's what happens when your child is a student in Ms. Sylvia's classroom. Let's explore the reasons why.


Every day Ms. Sylvia has something new to ask her students. All that great fun starts with a question. This question gets students to start thinking, predicting, coming up with ideas on what is going to happen and what can be done to make something happen.



The classroom's daily agenda is filled with hands on experimentation and exploration. Students are not just sitting around with worksheets, tracing the same letter they learned in September. No, they are developing as thinkers, as readers, as mathematicians and as learners should at their age.





 If you've been taking the time to talk to your children at home, you'll discover that their language and their vocabulary has been dramatically increasing over the past weeks. You'll also notice that homework has become a fun-filled family adventure where you get to learn and explore right along with your child.



For TRANSPORTATION theme this month, students have been having a wonderful time with parents creating their transportation items. Some were made of wood, some float and some look like they are ready to fly away.


Students were so excited to bring their
amazing projects to school. It was a
very special "Show and Tell" as well as
"Let's discover all we can about this
mode of transportation."


Ms. Sylvia's planning is full of
age appropriate activities. Students
are learning and exploring while
developing physically, emotionally
and cognitively.


Ms. Sylvia and Ms. Lidiya's classroom is an example of what great teaching looks like. It is a place where students are
nurtured and loved as they develop
a love for learning on their own
through their ongoing experiences
in the classroom with their peers
and continue to connect their learning
at home with their families.

We are happy to be able to take the
time to share these great moments
in your child's life. It is our hope that
you will see just how much time and
dedication goes into making each
hour of the day a very special one.

SHADOW PUPPET SHOWCASE

On a snowy day like today, you'd think students are not having a fun day while they are in school. Well, I beg to differ and you will, too. Walk with me please, into Ms. Crystal and Ms. Flor's classroom. Come inside and be in awe with just some of the great things taking place in their classroom.

 

 

The Unit for February is Light and Shadows. You'd think in Preschool, this theme is either too hard or boring. But, take a look and you'll discover that some of the most amazing things have been taking place this week.

 

 

For example, Ms. Crystal has created a wonderful "Shadow Puppet Theatre" where students are given free creative rights to put on shadow puppet stories. Here you will find Ms. Crystal narrating, "The Three Little Pigs". Students were never told what to do. They used their imagination and creativity to put on a "4 Star" performance for their classmates. These photos are proof that happy moments are non-stop in Classroom #1.

Well, the snow has stopped outdoors but indoors, our students are still looking forward to wonderful things coming their way. Maybe you can create your own puppet theatre at home and have as much of a wonderful adventure storytelling as your children have in class this week. Enjoy.

SNOW FUN IN MS. KIM'S CLASS

 

I know that you wish you could be here right now and see what I am looking at. Snow. Lots of snow. But, not only snow, Ms. Kim's students are enjoying this beautiful snow right in the comfort of their classroom. Well, let's give a shout out to Ms. Darlene who went out into out snow covered playground and scooped up all this wonderful snow for our students.

Why is this a great activity to do with our preschoolers?

This is a time where they are learning through play and exploration. I began to ask them, "What is this? Is this mashed potatoes?" Giggles. "No! It's not mashed potatoes!" "Oh, I know, this is ice cream." I said again. "No, it's not ice cream!" was the reply.

"How does it feel?" I heard Ms. Kim asking the children to think, to wonder, to feel and explore the texture that was before them. This is how they learn, they remember and they come home talking about amazing moments in their classroom.

LET IS SNOW Rm#7

 

      Students in Room#7 were busy making snow in a warm classroom. Hey! That snow wasn't melting! Of course not, it's white paint and cotton balls for snowflakes. These children were enjoying working together, sharing, and creating their winter scene.

 

 

 

 

 

 

      Here's one student who was so proud of his work he made sure I took his photograph. Yes, Dylan, we are so proud of your amazing snow scene.
